Discover the rich history of the Jacksonville Developmental Center at the Jacksonville Area Museum’s new exhibit opening Saturday, April 6.

Originally founded in 1851 as the Illinois State Hospital and Asylum for the Insane, it evolved into a self-sustaining community catering to thousands. Despite several name changes, it was finally known as Jacksonville Developmental Center in the 1980’s. The center closed in 2012 due to state budget cuts.

The exhibit showcases illustrations, photos, and artifacts, chronicling the center’s journey and treatment of residents over the years.
