Enjoy an evening of theatre with “How Do I Love Thee? An Evening with Elizabeth Barrett and Robert Browning” at the Jacksonville Public Library on September 23rd.

The story of this fascinating courtship is the subject of this evening’s two-person presentation, featuring Sherri Mitchell and Robert Seufert. Drawing upon letters, poems, and the 1930 Rudolf Besier play “The Barretts of Wimpole Street, How Do I Love Thee?” is a loving recreation of the unfolding relationship of two remarkable people.

A bedridden invalid for much of her life, forbidden to marry by her Victorian father, already past the age at which a woman was considered a spinster, Elizabeth Barrett would have had little hope or prospects of marriage. But when some of her poetry caught the eye of her younger fellow-poet Robert Browning, he was immediately smitten. Never one to shrink in the face of impossible odds, Robert not only met and wooed Elizabeth but eventually convinced her to elope with him to Italy.
